Who and What Is Black Britain Voting For?
The idea that Black people are permanently wedded to The Labour Party has run its course, the relationship has fractured. Black voters feel neglected. For many, the party they'd been loyal to for decades is no longer for them. All of our political parties are implicated in a long history of anti-black racism and Black people feel disillusioned. Labour has seriously eroded their trust and the damage may be beyond repair. A vote for labour may not be an endorsement of Keir Starmer but a rejection of the Tory government.
Voter turnout has declined since 1997. Why is this and why do some people not vote?
Labours treatment of Diane Abbott is also having an impact on voters. Racism is inherently gendered and sexualised and the racism witnessed in British politics, across both political parties, reflects so much of Black women’s wider experiences in British society. Black women are excluded from the category of womanhood.
